This is the first book in an Adult Contemporary Fantasy series with #ownvoices rep about a gay magician with the ability to see into a realm populated by elves and all sorts of spirits, forced to help his estranged brother when a murderous spirit possesses his brother’s wife. Not all magicians go to schools of magic.

My opinion

When I started the book I haven´t any expectations. I just knew that it was fantasy and that probably I'll like it. White trash warlock is a book that seems to be made for me😍. Adam Binder is, maybe, a lamentable person. He hasn’t talked to his mother or brother ever since he left Liberty House, more a jail than a school, and he lives with his aunt Sue. When his brother calls to ask him for help with his wife he will find himself obligated to return because family is family, ¿isn´t it?👀

The author's writing style is pretty simple and it’s easy to connect with the story; it involves us greatly in the world and through the narration the book flies by. For this being the first in the series I think it couldn’t have been done better: there’s a mystery to solve, lovable characters and a lot of diverse themes (LGBTQ+💯 and latin characters💘).

Adam Binder is not the perfect protagonist, he’s not the most powerful of his kind and he doesn’t know everything that needs to be done, which makes him a character that’s easy to relate with👏. It is his flaws and suppressed emotions, learning how to use “the sight” to help people and a sad past that makes us connect with him instantly. The way Adam is so connected with his magic, how he defends it and how he describes it has made me immensely happy, and the use of colors💙, too, to talk about his and others emotions is unique and beautifully done.

𝙰𝚍𝚊𝚖’𝚜 𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚍 𝚋𝚕𝚞𝚎 𝚠𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚑𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚖𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛. 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚕𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚛𝚎𝚍 𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚎𝚕𝚝 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝙱𝚘𝚋𝚋𝚢 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚖𝚞𝚌𝚑 𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚒𝚎𝚛

The relationship between Bobby and Adam is a HUGE part of the plot💟. Adam's problems with his family are gradually revealed to us, a conflict from the past based on bad decisions and regrets. I think that it was wonderful to see the evolution in both of them: two brothers that stopped talking to each other due to open wounds and that, little by little, start healing.

Bobby was my favorite without a doubt😭 (even though i would’ve liked for him to be more present in the novel). I have always thought that being the one in charge is a difficult position to being in. Bobby is the oldest brother, and having had an irresponsible and abusive father, soon he needed not to be only in charge of Adam, but his mother and the house alike.

Throughout the novel there’s a message about empathy💞, about seeing further than our own circumstances. Everyone has problems, everyone makes bad decisions and we can’t demand that only ours are listened to: just as we want everyone to understand us we need to understand them, and Adam slowly realizes that he judges too fast and that he needs to put himself in the shoes of the people that he loves.

The romance was pretty tamed. Did I like it? Of course, Vicente is a charming character and worthy of being mexican😆; his family, the Martinez, was one of the most precious things of the story in general. Nonetheless, I was missing a lot of his presence to see the development of the emotions that he started feeling for Adam and vice versa. Maybe me liking him so much was what made his absence so obvious: I need more pages with Vic in them please❤.

I also enjoyed a lot of the other characters, such as Argent and Silver, especially the badass princess Argent👀. The part that the fantastic creatures play was special: the saurians, elves, the leprechauns, etc. I think that having this variety elevated the story to new heights and I also loved the importance of tarot and death. The other side, the one only a few people can see, was presented so well by Adam, doing it in a simple way and it was incredible. I would definitely love to be a warlock💫.

The ending left me with my mouth hanging open, this is a story that leaves you wanting more, of wanting to continue immediately. WTW is a book about fantasy, characters and love, love in every one of its representations, about love that sacrifices, helps and saves. It is a story that keeps you at the edge of your seat, that makes you connect with the world, its emotions and its lives. It has been a delightful read that I highly recommend to any fantasy lover, to anyone that enjoys great character development and someone who is looking for a story that will not leave your mind for a long time🌞.

RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL

White trash warlock es un libro hecho a mi medida💖. Adam Binder es, quizá, una persona lamentable. No ha hablado con su madre o su hermano desde que logró salir de Liberty House, una cárcel más que una escuela, y vive al día con su tía Sue. Cuando su hermano lo llama para pedirle ayuda con su esposa se verá a si mismo obligado a volver porque a fin de cuentas familia es familia ¿no?👀

La pluma del autor es realmente sencilla y es fácil conectar con la historia, nos interna en su mundo de forma agradable, y a través de su narración las páginas pasan volando. Para ser un primer libro yo creo que no pudo haber sido mejor: hay un misterio a resolver, personajes entrañables y una gran diversidad en la narración (personajes LGBTQ+💯 y latinos💘).

 Adam Binder no es el protagonista perfecto, no es el más poderoso de su tipo y no sabe cada cosa que hay que hacerse: es un personaje con el que uno puede identificarse. con defectos y emociones reprimidas, aprendiendo constantemente a usar 'La visión' para ayudar a las personas, y con un pasado triste que nos hace conectar inmediatamente con él. La forma en que Adam está tan conectado con su magia, cómo la defiende y cómo la describe me ha hecho inmensamente feliz, y el uso de colores💙, además, para hablar de sus emociones y las de los demás es única y preciosa.

La relación entre Bobby y Adam es un GRAN punto en la trama💟. La problemática de Adam con su familia se nos va revelando poco a poco, un conflicto del pasado basado en malas decisiones y arrepentimientos. Considero que ha sido maravilloso ver la evolución de ello: dos hermanos que habían dejado de hablarse por heridas aún abiertas y que, poco a poco, se van cerrando. Bobby ha sido mi favorito sin duda😭 (aunque me hubiese gustado que tuviese más presencia). Siempre he considerado que ser la persona a cargo de, o bueno, la que lleva las riendas de la situación, es cosa difícil. Bobby es el hermano mayor, y habiendo tenido a un padre irresponsable y violento, pronto no sólo estuvo a cargo de Adam, sino de su madre y la casa por igual.

Hay un mensaje palpable acerca de la empatía💞, acerca de ver más allá de nuestros propios pies. Todos tenemos problemas, todos tomamos malas decisiones y no podemos exigir que sólo los propios interesen: así como queremos que nos comprendan hay que comprender, y Adam poco a poco se da cuenta de que juzga las cosas muy rápido y que debe ponerse en los zapatos de las personas que quiere.

El romance fue muy leve. ¿Me gustó? Por supuesto, Vicente es un personaje encantador y digno de ser mexicano😆; además de que su familia, los Martinez, en general ha sido una de las cosas más preciosas de la historia. Sin embargo, me faltó más de su presencia para ver el desarrollo de esas emociones que comenzaron a sentir tanto él como Adam. Quizá el quererlo mucho es lo que hizo que notase su ausencia: necesito más páginas con Vic por favor.

Otros personajes, como Argent y Silver, también me gustaron bastante, aunque amé más a Argent👀. El papel que juegan las criaturas fantásticas fue especial: los saurians, los elfos, los duendes, etc.  Creo que esta variedad le dio a la historia un alce increíble y me encantó además ver lo importante que es el tarot y la muerte. El otro lado, que solo pocas personas pueden ver, Adam nos lo presentó con simpleza y fue increíble, definitivamente yo amaría ser bruja.

El final me dejó con la boca abierta, es una historia que te deja con ganas de más, de querer continuar la historia. WTW es un libro de fantasía, de personajes y de amor, el amor en todos sus aspectos, el amor que sacrifica, ayuda y salva. Es una historia que te mantiene atento a lo que ocurre, que te hace conectar con el mundo, sus emociones y sus vidas. Ha sido una lectura agradable que recomiendo fervientemente a cualquier fanático de la fantasía, a quien guste de ver un gran desarrollo de personajes y a quien busque una historia que se va a quedar en la memoria. 🌞
